My Watch Resume
Ive been wanting to write a blog for a while now about my adoration of watches and timekeeping. Its just a practice, for myself, to get better at writing. I love watches as an art form of design and as a tool for everyday convenience. I do not have a collection of watches, but merely a handful of pieces that have ended up in my possession. Nothing special, a few Seiko's, a couple Casio's and a Relic watch my Mom gave me in 2011...
My first watch is the aforementioned Relic, given to me as a Christmas gift to wear at work as a Shift Supervisor of Panera Bread. I wore it daily to work because it was a requirement of management to have a watch, because cell phones were not allowed. Its a blue dial watch with a black PVD case. Chronograph with a 24 sub dial that is just a 24 hour function of the normal time. Quartz of course. I stopped wearing the watch when m,y primary job became working in a sheet metal shop and eventually the watch was sadly relegated to a box in the closet.
I was not to wear a watch again for a couple of years. I began doing Stand-Up Comedy in 2014 and soon after thought it would be a good idea to have a watch on my wrist to be able to time my sets. In 2016 I bought a watch that I always thought was cool and ever since I was a child I wanted one. A Casio A158W-1. I wore it all the time and in no time at all I found how how convenient it was to have the time right there on my wrist. Not to mention how fun the watch was/is to look at! I wore my beloved Casio every day for over a year. Wore it on my first trip through Europe and everyday at work. I never did get around to timing my comedy sets with it. Just wore it for fun. I eventually retired it from daily work wear when I bought another Casio which I will get to in a minute.
I was listening to a podcast at work from a comedian I listen to often, Dean Delray. He was talking about his love of watches, namely Rolex and Tudor, and was explaining why these pieces are so valuable and sought after. This is what ignited the flame inside me start the search for my first mechanical timepiece.
I began researching online and trying to find out all the information there was to know for a budding new watch enthusiast! I scoured the internet for reviews and videos of everything from Orient to Oris. I watched every video and thought I found the watch that would be my first mechanical timepiece. A green dial Orient with an open heart case. Problem was that I couldn't find one anywhere online except Ebay. Being new to the game I wasn't up for buying grey market first time around. So I looked elsewhere. After a few weeks of research I came upon a watch that couldn't escape my mind once I was introduced. The Seiko Sarb033. An automatic timepiece fully made in Japan. I bought my first mechanical piece for Christmas in 2016 using money my parents gave to me as a gift. I have worn this watch practically every day since it arrived in the mail. I've gone through many straps and still enjoy the stock steel bracelet for it. Although since receiving a Colareb Venezia strap for my Birthday this year, it hasn't seen any use. I will wear this Seiko for many years to come as I save for more expensive pieces. Its the cornerstone of my collection and a cherished possession
I replaced my Casio with another Casio in April on 2017. I retired the first one from work use because it began to take on too much wear for my comfort. Its been around the world with me and I don't want to see it damaged beyond repair. So Again I began my research for the best work watch I could find. It came down to the Casio G-Shock DW5610. Its got everything from Day and Date functions to atomic time keeping. I use this watch to this day as my go to beater for any water activities and my daily work in a restaurant kitchen. Its light weight and designed to take a beating. This watch has been the perfect watch to wear whenever I don't want my Seiko to get injured.
My final watch acquisition came in 2018. I recently visited my family in Connecticut and when I visited my Uncle, we began talking about watches. He mentioned how my Grandfather might have some watches that I could have if he found them. I didnt think anything would be found. But a few weeks after I got back home I received a text message from my Uncle with apicture of a watch that belonmged to my Grandfather. It was no Patek Phillipe as my family was not rich after rasingin 15 children. It was a humble Seiko Chronograph from around 2000. It has a beautiful panda dial with orange accents. It had some fogging on the inside of the crystal, but since its a quartz movement I believe could be repaired for a reasonable amount.
I want to buy a Rolex some day. That's my goal. Every day my interest change from an Oyster Perpetual to a Submariner to an Explorer II. But the through line is that they're all made by Rolex. I have no interest in buying other watches when that money could be put to use saving for a Rolex chronometer. That's my goal and I'm sticking to it. When that day comes, ill be a very happy watch enthusiast :)
